A group of Chinese investors are looking to set up factories to produce travel goods—such as luggage, backpacks, handbags, and wallets—in Cambodia, hoping to capitalize on the Kingdom’s duty-free quota under the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), according to Kaing Monika, deputy secretary-general of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC). He said the Chinese delegation, comprising of 16 companies, were visiting the country last month and were in the final stages of their market research. On Jul 1 Cambodia was granted duty-free benefits for exports of travel goods to the US, with the US Ambassador to Cambodia William Heidt describing this as the largest expansion for Cambodian products into the US market in 20 years since both countries started trading in 1995.
